This Greenhouse-barge on the Hudson River has been successful at producing sustainable food while preventing runoff and harmful effects of soil degradation.

It is a science prototype and is open for educational tours. This is really simple idea yet a very powerful one. Why not grow our foods on local waterways and utilize hydroponics/aeroponics?

These “barges” could be moved around or stay stationary. They could be pulled off the shipping channel for waterways that have limited transportation lanes.

As you may know, the transportation and chemicals involved in growing our food contribute to most of the environmental effects. Heavy machinery and use of fossil fuels is also avoided by utilizing this type of greenhouse.

Have you ever seen the drawings for skyscrapers that grow enough food for a city? These are still in the startup phase, but this is another possible fix for the large demands of food in metropolises.

The event and the Accelerate 77 project is organized by the Institute of Cultural Affairs and will feature Keynote Speaker, Karen Weigert, Chief of Sustainability Officer for City of Chicago.
